Cindy Toledo
Cindy Toledo is Maya Q’anjob’al, born, raised, and currently living in Los Angeles, California. Cindy graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science with a focus on International Relations and a minor in Latin American Studies. Prior to joining Polaris Law Group, she was an Accredited Representative for the Department of Justice for an Indigenous-led nonprofit. She also worked as a legal assistant at immigration law firms and participated as an AmeriCorps member in Jumpstart, a network of volunteers who prepare children attending preschool in low-income neighborhoods for school success.
She is a Technical Team member volunteer for the National Council of Indigenous Peoples in the Diaspora (CONPID) and an Advisory Board Member Volunteer for Casa de la Cultura Maya in Los Angeles. Along with this, Cindy volunteers with various Indigenous rights organizations. She has also represented the challenges that Indigenous peoples, especially the Maya community, face at the US border and within this country at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.
Cindy’s parents came from Guatemala to this country primarily due to fear for their lives during the civil war and all the violence they faced and witnessed, in addition to the poverty faced during these times. Being raised in an immigrant family and seeing the challenges that her community faces has made her passionate about advocating for and helping families and individuals with their immigration cases. In addition to her work, Cindy is dedicated to preserving and promoting Maya Q'anjob'al linguistic traditions. She is a trilingual woman progressively obtaining proficiency in her ancestral language, English and Spanish. She has participated in cultural activities since she was very young and has been a cultural bearer for the Maya Q’anjob’al for over 20 years.
In her spare time, Cindy aims to fulfill her ultimate goal: to ensure that Maya customs and traditions are kept alive and never forgotten; therefore, she volunteers in different spaces. She also enjoys spending time with her nieces, building unforgettable memories with her family, and loves to travel.
